So I have an `84 GS, It has Cruise Control. One button labeled "Cruise Control" (or something like that) is next to the steering wheel (right side) (opposite side of the dash dimmer) It is a button that you push in (light on button turns orange) push out and light turns off. Then on my thingy to turn on the windshield washers there is a button on the edge that says "set" the *** on it moves up and down, but the writing has worn off. Any help? I want to use this. I drive the freeways around 1:00am and would like to set the cruise at 90mph.LOL Help

 

Let me see if I remember. pushing the button on the thingy to turn the winshield washers will set it. If you keep pressing it it will accelerate and stay at the speed it has when you release it. turning it towards the dash will make the car coast, and I forget what happens when you turn it the other way, because I never use that function.

 

Push the button on the dash on (light comes on). Then, when you get to cruising speed, push in on the end of the "thingy" to turn the whipers on. Cruise will be set.

Here is a quick cheatsheet:

Switch to left of steering wheel - Master Switch to turn on/off the CC.

Wiper 'stalk' - controls wipers; only the button and the twisting end are used for CC.

Button on end - Sets, Accelerates

Twist end up/clockwise - Resume last SET speed.

Twist end down/ccw - Coast

CC works between about 35 and 85 mph - below 35, it won't set, and above 85, it won't set or maintain. It also will not Accelerate (by turning twist end) beyond 85.

Applying Brake pedal pressure OR disengaging Clutch will turn off the present SET cruise speed (Master Switch will still be on).

Using your CC can save gas and money, and helps to keep maintenance costs down. When you let the car decide when to accelerate/decelerate to meet changing road elevations and hills, it only applies enough fuel to get the job done - it doesn't overcompensate like your brain tends to do, and results in much better gas mileage (as much as 10-15% in most cases).

i have a question that maybe someone can help me with. i have an 84 gs and i use an 85 gsl for parts. would it be hard to remove the cc system from the gsl and instal it in my gs? i have taken a lot of the gsl exras and transplanted them to my gs. i have been thinking about the cc for a while but havn't tried it yet.

Thank You everyone!!! I tried it and it works!!!! Im just surprised it still works after 20 years!!! I am my cars third owner (im 18, bought it a month before i turned 18) The first owner was a Certified Mazda Mechanic. Put a new engine in at 100K Second owner put 55K on it, Its now at 156K (1,000 from me driving 30 miles a day to see my girlfriend in the south S.F. Bay area, I live in the east bay. I love my car! my first car and im already addicted to the rotor!!! If it dont have a rotor it shouldnt be called a motor!!

 

While we're on the topic any suggestions for troublshooting a non-working CC system? I push the button and the light comes on but the CC just wont work....

 

Well you need some stuff under the hood to work for this to operate, along with the brain box which is under the drivers storage bin IIRC. Under the hood theres a solenoid on the rats nest which allows vacuum to go to the CC unit (mounted behind the washer reservior). The cc unit is vacuum operated and has a cable which connects to the carb to open or close the throttle.

 

Heh, I wonder if mine works in the 82.
