how do I adjust idle and other general carb issues
My stock 85 GS idles at 2000. It has done so since I got the car. Reccomended idle is 750, verified from 3 sources. This high idle has not caused any driving problems, but it is an annoyance.
I don't think that it is a vacuum leak because the idle is steady at 2000 rpm. I had a look at the choke and throttle and throttle linkage. On the rear of the carb there is a threaded rod that moves with the throttle, there also seems to be a control or stop tab above and in line with it. There is no adjusting nut on the threads and the threads are about 1" shy of the tabs.
The only reference I have been able to find in my Haynes was to Fast Idle, which is not adjustable with the carb installed. Is fast idle the same as idle?
How do I go about lowering the idle and what should my linkages look like?
On a somewhat related note, there is a flap over the secondaries. When my friend was running my 7 at BeaverRun this weekend we were having a peek at the idle issue and he moved this flap and it stuck open. Before it was sitting about 3/4 closed. What does this do? Since it has moved, the car doesn't want to start unless I give it a shot of starter fluid. Driving and idle charachteristics were unchanged.
After being run as it was designed to be driven at the track, she's running a bit better. I also now have something to shoot for, my friend driving it (best friend since I was 6) really showed me what the car will do.

Check the dashpot, too.
BTW, a vacuum leak can be as consistant as ever.
