holly carb application question

just pokeing around for some info. I wish the search function was more 'interactive'

I was looking at the carbs on ebay and found lots of holly carbs with numbers like 650 700 and higher. Can someone tell me if those carbs are basically universal? In the threads that I found while searching I mostly see 650 and 750 cfm. Does that mean that there universal? That would mean that all one has to do is change venturies of the carb to your specification?

example..

Are those carbs or can those carbs fit on intakes made for 12A or 13B intakes?

DrunkClever,

Yes holley is pretty darn universal, not much changes in thier world. The size they refer to the carbs are example 650 cfm, which is a good fit on a streetport rotary. All you need is a modified intake that accepts "Square Bore" design. Same with the Camden supercharger. Another cool option you got is Thottle Body Fuel Injection, fits just like a carb but gives you the benefits of a stand alone fuel system, and increased throttle response. The only thing you have to look for is whether your intake will be a 4 barrel or 2 barrel setup, almost all of the intakes I have seen accept a 4 barrel square bore carb. IF you wanna get real ghetto fabulous you can take your stock intake, and buy a square bore carb spacer to use as a template, grind, grind, grind, and a little jb weld You can fabricate your own intake! I wouldnt reccommend this if you only own one stock intake!

actually I believe that most aftermarket carbs are "Square Bore" 4 barrel so you can get away with using:
Edelbrock
Holley
Demon
Most aftermarket carbs use a generic mount base to adapt to all the common intakes those piston guys run on thier hot rods. You can always buy or fabricate an adapter that fits a carb to the square bore design. The only problem with adapter plates is they are usually 1/2 inch thick and may cause air cleaner clearnace problems, but they low profile air cleaner kits too.

i've seen someone use an adapter to bolt a 2 barrel carb to a holley squarebore racing beat intake lol, it was very odd, but apparently worked pretty well

if your engine is stock I wouldn't recommend anything bigger than a 500cfm.
I have a street port intake with a 465cfm carb from racing beat which holley says they no longer make. I installed it before I had the engine ported. it made the engine run rich and wouldn't idle properly from cold to hot.
after getting a rebuilt street ported engine the carb works great.
I have actually modified the carb beyond what racing beat had done to it. I did this because of a worn out throttle plate and wanted more fuel.... I wouldn't call racing beat for info unless you like pulling your hair out. I also had other problems that I solved on my own.
Holley sold me a throttle plate with butterflies for under 70.00. the plate was probable for a 500 to a 650 with the size of the butterflies. it just fit!!!
I don't know what carb they sell online because it still says 465cfm which is discontinued.
but the manifold is a great buy by itself. if you by one polish the bores smooth the cast is really rough. they make it as big as you can get but when i did this it made a big difference
you can buy a 600cfm from jegs for 242.99 this would be a good start.
if your familiar with a holley their really easy to maintain and modify.

thanks for the info guys. so its carb.. adaptor.. intake. I was thinking of scratching my efi plans. I want to get the best out of these engines.. a 12A and a 13B. As I don't have much in the way of hands on experiance, I like to ask tons of questions and so tons of searches.

if I find a 650cfm for cheap.. i am going to jump on it. I am confident that I make or get someone to make an adaptor to fit a racing beat intake. I think my plans are starting to solidify.

now to do a search for info on throttle body fuel injection
