hmmm.. dlidfis coil choices

OK, sorry and hope I don't get flamed for this as I'm 4 rum n' cokes past coherent...

I'm putting together something of a budget racecar, at the moment I have a 82 rxl gsl w/ a stock 12a, yawpower race carb and a RB 12a race header and exhaust yet to be determined. Porting is planned but not yet performed.

I'm about ready to wire up my ignition and have decided upon dlidfis, but am a bit confused on coil choices. I think (but cannot find) that jeff20b mentioned a shortcoming of MSD blaster II coils, wasn't able to find the exact comment.

Well, we're racing always above 3000 rpm, rolling starts and such. Any advice on which coils to buy? I have 2 factory coils already...

Well, thanks for any helpful advice, and I appreciate all the flamers creativity.. I shall endeaver to incorporate their imagination the next time I decide to bash someone!

i believe the shortcoming is that it must be mounted rightside up... and cannot be on it's side. I'd also consider 2nd gen coil.

2 Gen Coil gives big spark. Dont forget the ballast resistor.

GM HEI 2-Tower coils work from what I heard. I dont know how well though.

I have my blaster 2 coils mounted in the stock location aka. mounted on their side, with no problems yet. These coils came off of ebay or the for sale section here for about 50 bucks slightly used.

I was planning on doing the dldfis with the blaster 2's and a stock diamond coil. This wont happen until later on in the summer after I do some other upgrades. Let me know how it works out.

OK, 2gdlfis looks good, now trying to decipher the TT mod... is someone selling a board or do I just wire it up based on some schematics? Is there a version that works or do they all have overheating problems?

For DLIDFIS with J-109 (stock) ignitors, stock Diamond or aftermarket Bosch coils are fine. For GM HEI ignitors, you can use any coil that will work with the HEI.

The name of the game is about keeping the ignitor happy by providing a proper load. J-109s can pass 2 or 3 amps while HEIs can handle up to 4 or 5 amps in current-limiting mode. HEI ignitors can handle a 'beefier' coil. In other words, a coil with less primary resistance, such as a blaster or something. Sorry, it's been a while.
