Hi :) my First post (kinda long)
Hi :) my First post (kinda long)
I'm new to this board, and to imports all together, I would like to just say hi, and probably tell you all about myself
So here I go:
I'm 20, I have a Girlfriend (20 on the 27th) I once had a 91 firebird, it was the one car that was just perfect for me, spent 2 years making it perfect, it was my first car, and I loved it
I wrecked it, may 25th will be the one year mark for the wreck
it was sad.
I bought an 86 Camaro afterwards thinking it would be easier to work on a carburated V8 instead of a TBI V8 (not to many options for TBI out there
) But I was horribly wrong, and have since rebuilt everything on the car, minus the carb itself, which I'm working on at a VERY slow pace.
I got my RX-7 from my mom as pay back for some cash I threw towards her direction, I told her she didn't have to, but my Girlfriend took a liking to the RX-7, and my mom never drives it, so she thought it would be a good 'pay back', which it was, for being such a small displacement (in comparison to my Camaros engine) that RX-7 is SMOKING HOT! not as fast as my camaro, but thats because my camaros a V8, and I have had a year to fix it up
I know absolutely NOTHING about rotery engines, I don't even know what the insides look like, or how the combustion happens, I see avatars with pics of the engines, is that the cumbustion process, the spinning?
I don't know what a 13b engine is, or how many cubic inches the engine is, I'm guessing like 50-80ish, but I don't know if I'm making fun of it, or if thats seriously how tiny the engine is.
I've been looking online, and theres not any real big 'one stop' tech article sites out there, I really need help, theres things on this car I'm not used to, I'm very smart when it comes to cars, but I've never worked on anything other then V8s, chevy, pontiac, thats about it, all muscle, you know, so I'm looking at this car and going "Huh? whats that.... wait... thats not right?"
So please bare with me while I learn abit, I will be posting alot while I fix the car up, as almost everything I run acrost I can almost promise I know nothing about.
Well thats the bit on me, I babble in everypost also, so this is pretty common (long post, not staying on topic towards the end)
I have alot of question I could just pop up and ask, but unlike all the other boards I post on, I wont make my first post a question
So hi everyone, if you read all that, then you are much more patient then me

Welcome to the forum.
You're Camaro only seems fast cause your RX7 is stock.
You can soon solve that though!
Anyway... Check out these couple of sites for some good info.
www.rotaryengineillustrated.com for a rundown on the parts and how they work.
www.iluvmyrx7.com for some manuals and tech info and stuff.
And this forum has heaps of info that can be found easily by searching.
Good luck with the car, you'll love it.

welcome to the forum, everyone already posted all the links i was going to, so I can't really add much to this. I have a 82 Trans Am (thus the username) and let me tell you, as you start to work on the rx7 more and get used to some of the quirks, you'll find its a much better car all around, the build quality of third gen F body's sucks ***, FB's are quite solid and build pretty good. It's kinda weird, i used to be all about american muscle, but once i got into imports, especially old school ones i don't think i'll go back. Anyway, good luck with your cars

Wow, you all are a friendly group eh :)
I was expecting maybe a reply or two
you guys are really helpful, I have looked at all the sites and such, I still can't believe how this engine actually works, thats insane, rebuilding an engine like this must be a snap, not that I would attempt such a thing though
Well thank you all for the warm welcoming, unfortunatly I am in Orlan, ca, its a tiny city south of redding, about 20 miles from Chico, but I have a friend in orlando, lucky little **** she is
I havent seen ANY Rx-7s of any kind up here, and I've been looking, although its refreshing to have a non-popular car, its depressing to know the lack of help to be gotten at the local speed shops, I went in there, and they just froze up, acting like I'm a freak
But its also because last time I was in there, I was buying something for my Camaro, and later smoked the shop owner while proclaiming that I eat rice, and now I'm buying parts for an RX-7
I'm loving this car up, minus the rust on the trunk area, and the shotty audio, its a good car.
Just a real fast question, which would be a better manual (book not tranny
) for the RX-7, Chilton, or Haynes?
I usually buy Haynes for all my cars, but I bought a Chiltons for an 86 Celebrity I was working on, and that manual was abit better then the Firebird/ Camaro ones from Haynes (I only owns manuals for F-bodies, minus the Celebrity that I nolonger have)
Well Thank you all again for saying hi and such, I hope to become a big part of the board soon, right after I figure out what I'm actually driving (I know nothing about the tranny, chassis, or engine minus specs)

I've heard nothing but good stuff about the Hayne's manual, and my Chilton manual isn't as in depth as I'd like.
Welcome to the forum ; )
Oh, and before I forget, do you happen to know offhand what the year and trim level of your car is? Like 1985 GSL or some such?

Welcome
That 13b is 80 Cubic inches, or 1.3 Liters...
It probably has an aluminium intake on top that says EGI in big letters... That's fuel injected.
Other models have a big blue air cleaner on top. They are the 12A's at 70 Cubic inches... They come with a 4 barrel carb.
If yours is a true GSL-SE, it also has a Limited Slip differential (Similar to GM's PosiTraction) and disc brakes on the rear.
Although the parts are interchangable off other cars, the GSL-SE's brakes are bigger, the wheel bolt pattern is more common for aftermarket wheels, it came with 14 inch alloys stock, and on 84/85 cars, the rear trailing arm mounts are 20mm lower to reduce tail happiness.

Ah, So close....
I was really looking forward to having a Carb on it, as stupid as it may sound, I thought it may have been under/in the Re-egi box (Reading the last post, I realize now that it is the intake, freakish
)
Oh well, FI is cool I guess, but that means I still have no use for the carb I bought
Um, real fast question about the whole engine thing, 13b is like the RX-7s (mazdas) version of the big block (chevy) I take it? how much smaller is the 12a and such?
Up until right now, I assumed that the RX-7 that I have was probably base model and fairly 'cheapsy' as getting a well maintain good car is hard around here.
My RX-7 is FAR from well maintained though, 250k on the engine
it needs rebuilt horribly bad, but I have been looking around, 13b engines are very costly, I havent seen the price on getting it rebuilt, but already rebuilt engines are up into the $1.5k area 0_0!
I feel really lame asking all these questions, is there like a RX-7 for complete idiots sites out there or something

Here we go bro... I'll lay the smack down for ya...
12a is a little smaller than the 13b. These two motors work the same way and have 2 rotors. Rotors are the thigns that spin around inside.
the GSL-SE is the "sports edition" or something like that. The GSL (no SE) is the Luxury model or something liek that... more features, power windows, EQ, leather, sun roof, etc.
If you want aftermarket supplies, check out www.mazdatrix.com and take a look around. If you want interior replacement parts (like cosmetic **** for the inside), order a victoria british catalog... search google for victoria british.
Rule #1, never take your car to a piston mechanic, they won't know jack squat. Since you are in California, you are in a good palce to get your car worked on. There are a lot of shops out there in CA. Find a mechanic and stick with them. Document everything, and always pay attention to your baby, it needs it.
When people speak of "ported engines" they are talking about making the intake and exhaust "valves" bigger, thus increasing the flow of the engine. But remember... the rotary doens't have "valves" like your piston cars have... becaues it operates differently.
Just incase... it is rear wheel. 5 Speed tranny (unless automatic it's a 3sp + OD).
84 and 85 are the two years that the SE were made, with the larger 13B. The RX-7 came out in 79 and for two years they were known as "SA"'s ... the SA is the VIN production code... after that they went to "FB" for first generation, then FC for second generation (86-91), then FD for the 3rd gen (93-95). SA's have an older look and a wierd looking back end. They are very light, but kinda wierd... lots of funky emissions crap. But SA's are lighter. When ppl talk about FB's they are also talking abou SA's... but if someone mentions SA, they mean 79-80 models. same body style.
You have 250K miles on your engine... that's a WHOLE lot. You're probably going to need either a new engine, or a rebuilt engine soon. That's a lot of miles on that engine.
I hope all this helps ya... I know what kinda info you are asking about, so I hope all this helps.

Your new rotary will soon be able to **** all over your carb'd v8 as well as many others. I've got an 85 GS with the 12A in it (just over 1 liter of displacement). My cousin is trying to catch up to me every time we go out to race. He's got a 5.7 liter engine. It's loud, obnoxious and takes off like a raped ape, but he still can't can't get past my rear 1/4 panel.
Dude you can carb that engine man. www.racingbeat.com sells the whole set up man. Carbed is so much better too in my own opinion. Much better air flow to me. Man I eat up the v8s a lot man lol. Trust me you'll learn to love the engine. But first trust everyone when they say it, rebuild that puppy. She'll be running so much better when you rebuild her. It'll be costly, but, it's worth the work and labor. You can free up tons of....ponies in your dialic I would say. Rats nest, e-fan, exhaust, better intake system (carbed), etc etc. You'll figure it out. But don't forget that car has a stiff suspension as it is. You're not going to want to seriously modify the rear end or you'll be slippery than a lesbian twister party. Be easy on that engine right now and make sure it doesn't over heat. Thats like cracking the block in the piston engine. Engine would be no good. Treat her right and she'll treat you right.
