Help on Small or Large Bearing

when i bought my 82 gsl it had a welded base model end on it. open (welded) with drums. apparently they tried drifting it (previous owner(s)) and broke the oem lsd so put on the open. but one day that welded rear blew so i put a 79 rear on it. i hate the open diff (i had so much fun on that welded diff) and i have another gsl rear in my garage. iknow past 83.5 wont fit cuz large bearing, how can i check (if i can) to see if its small or large bearing? my friend says he believes it is another 82 rear but i want to be sure before i go swapping.

i could post pics if thers anyway to tell. its just sitting in my garage.
