Pop the headlights, remove the covers, see if you can reach in that way and grab a hold of the cable.

At least, that's what I had to do on my GTUs when the cable snapped.

that happend once in one of my REPU's. You have to crawl underneath the car (driver side). Use long wire hanger or something similar to fish out the release mechanism (follow the release cable) and pull it towards the driver side. Its not an easy task. After a few minutes, TAKE A BREAK (SMOKE AND DRINK BEER). if not, you may ended up breaking more things.

You can do that with a 2nd gen but not a 1st. The hood doesnt exactly open the right way for the way you described.

Thanks for all your help. My son was actually able to reach up over the transmission on the passenger side and push the bottom of the latch toward thr drivers side. I am so very happy. The cable had actually broken right at the latch. Again, thanks all.

Hey! I didn't get to post my pun about how trying to get the hood open was like fighting windmills, dammit!

Glad you got it open anyway...

I'm curious if there is a way to use an electronic hatch release to make one for the hood? Seems like it would'nt be that hard.

That would tend to negate any "advantage" to having an electric hood release...

There might be a way to keep the mechanical release (cable) and add the electric one.

On a REPU it'd be kind of a non-issue seein' as how the battery isn't under the hood anyway.

You can also get at the hood latch mechanism if you remove the panel with the window sprayers on it. Once that's off you can get a screwdriver into the engine bay and pop the latch.

The hood needs to be up because there are screws that old that panel on that are under the weatherstripping.

I had this happen to me when I went for a smog check a couple years back; took me a couple evenings fishing about to figure a solution.

Ultimately I made a right-angled stick out of some light aluminum angle stock, with a camera & light on the end so I could see what I was doing, fished it up the passenger side & pushed the release lever. Pop!

Little more complex on a car with full emissions - - less room to work - - but pushing from the the passenger side is easier than trying to pull from the driver side.
