Help with Headliner
hey....I'm beginning to put the interior of my new '83 together...and i came to the realitization that my headliner has a lot of cracks in it (i obviously dont look up very much).
Its black leather (fake or real?) and I want to know what my options are...
does anyone have any experence in recovering them...either professonaly or DIY
Where can i get a replacement?
Thanks

there are a few places around here that will recover it for $15...plus whatever the price for whatever material you choose....so i would say search around town and get some quotes.

most likely it's vinyl, replacing that is actually quite easy.
Pull down the actual headliner (some sort of pressboard) and rip off the whatever covering is on it. Take a palm sander or by hand and just sand off the glue residue. It's going to be so dry it's just going to come right up. Course sandpaper will work fine, fine tends to get clogged fairly quick. Once everything is nice and clean, as you want a nice adhering surface, get yourself a couple cans of 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive. Make sure to coat the headliner real well, and the material your going to glue on.
The only tricky part about this whole project is laying it on. I had 2 other people help me as they held the material high enough so it would not touch the sides of the headliner. I simply just stuck my hand smack in the middle and pressed it down and worked my way out in a circular fashion. If the edges of the headliner are high make sure they don't contact before anything else, other wise your going to have to rip to get the material off. Once this stuff sticks, it's not coming off. Have Fun!
