Help with '82 RX7

Well everyone, heres the deal. I am thinking of buying this car but it has a few problems. None of which are big except one, and except for that one, I know how to fix everything else. This "one" problem is a pretty severe one, and I don't think I would trust the car without knowning whats exactly wrong with it. Anyway, the car is cheap (I think I can have it for about 500), but the problem is this: The car starts fine, but idles a bit low (I don't have much experience with rotary engines) around 500ish. It seems like it moves fine, but has a horrible vibration I attribute to worn bearings on the wheels. The key here is, when you hit the gas, it does not accelerate at all. I mean, its like got MAYBE 10-15 horsepower. At least it feels like that, I can pedal my bike faster... The strange thing is though, when it hits 5300 (approx) it like cleans up whatever the problem is, and takes off like a rocket, almost chirping the tires in the process. And no, its not a turbo, and I DO know how to drive, and the pedal is all the way to the floor during all of this, and I am not basing the acceleration off of other cars I own. This thing has a SERIOUS power problem before 5.3k. The funny thing is though, it doesn't seem to hesitate, or cough, at all before getting there, its almost like the car is just slow as ****, and then someone hits a nos bottle at that rpm. Thats the easiest way to describe it. I don't know if it was smoking because it was night time when I was driving it. Other things to through into the mix are that its a 1982, with a 5-speed and aout 140k on the clock if that matters. Thats all I know, I hope someone can shed some light on this because I would hate to pass up a fun car like this if its something I can fix without too much *** pain. Thanks alot guys for any help, its much appreciated.

You need to do an compression test, it's possible that the rear housing has little or no compression. Does it rev up at idle easily? rx7doctor

If what your meaning is, does it rev up in nuetral easily, the answer is yes. There is no noticeable difference between what speed the engine is at vs how fast it revs. In nuetral, you would have no idea there is something wrong.

Well the first thing to check on all rotaries is compression, other than that it could be a severley blocked cat, bad leading ignitor and or coil. After you verify if you have decent compression on front and rear rotors, take a timing light and verify it lights up on both leading and trailing coils, if one does not send a signal, it's dead. As far as the cat is concerned, only taking it off will verify or doing an exhaust test will tell even thoug i'm
skeptical of that. It's also possible that the secondaries on the carb are not opening. There
is a spring on the carb that pops off and is common. It's testing time we go, welcome to the
world of rx7's. rx7doctor

should I buy the car then for 500 bucks or not? Or should I do the compression test, and if it tests good, THEN buy it for 500?
