Hello - newbie 79 owner here

I decided to take my 79 RX-7 out of storage (where it has sat for the last 5 years) and fix it up. I am far from being a mechanic, but I have a mechanic friend helping me out (although he doesn't know anything about rotaries). So I found this forum.

I look forward to learning from y'all and getting my RX-7 back on the road. I see that this is a very active forum and think I have a lot of previous posts to go through before I start asking questions.

But if you want to give me any starting advice on what to do with a RX-7 that has sat for a very long time, I'll gladly accept it. I already drained the old gas and my buddy is going to take off the carb and clean it all out. I sure hope my apex seals are still good...... If they aren't, then I'm going to be searching this forum for a lot of advice.

I also have a plate to block off the vacuum pump and I heard I'm supposed to also block off the maze under between the carb and the intake. Hope that is easy.

I'm probably going to take the hood and fenders off and make molds of them. Then I can make some fiberglass or carbon fiber replicas - so if the 15 year old son runs into something, I can have spare body pieces to throw on there.

If my engine is bad, I'll probably be looking for a replacement, so if anyone has tips on what to get and where to get it - let me know. i.e. - do I have to get the exact 1.1 L engine, or can I move up to the 13B?

Thanks all and I look forward to joining y'all in conversation

Hey bud, welcome to the dark side.

Do a search on cars that have been in storage a long time, seals wont be a problem but be sure to add MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) to the engine and turn it over manually a few times, this will lube the engine and seals before you start it.

Beware when you do start it there will be LOTS of white smoke after this for a few minutes don't change your plugs until that clears up.

You have a good grip on searching which is a irritant to many members here, that's great, don't hesitate to ask after you search if you fail to find what you're lloking for.

Welcome.

Bringing an RX7 back to life.

While the rotary mystfiys many, the rest of the car is just that, a car, works the same as the rest of them in regards to components and repairs.

The engine takes fuel, air and spark to run, just like a piston engine does, only it goes round and round, not up and down. They can be prone to flooding and do not tolerate overheating.

Compared to a piston engine, they are 3rd world simple, especially the 1st gen carbed versions.

New members are required to post pics, we all like to drool over our keyboards. Even over the rough ones.

Welcome to the Darkside.
