I had my exhaust re-routed so that it doesnt pass under the tranny, that way I could cut back a LOT of the heatshielding and remove my trans without any trouble.I only left what was directly above the exhaust system.Even with a redhot turbo and cat,Ive never had any problems.

If you retain the stock exhaust system's curve to the middle of the car,I would advise against removing the shields.Yes,they suck.......but so does frying the tranny and U-joints that sit right above the thermo-nuclearly hot, rotary exhaust system.

I've had no problems, but what temperature should I be worried about my transmission?
