I had the problem and traced it to the toggle switch not making good contact - if I pressed on the toggle at different points I would eventually find a spot where it would make positive contact and the lights would go down - most of the time it worked OK by just pushing the toggle switch, but when they would not go down, it was always the toggle switch not making a good contact
I would appreciate knowing if this is your problem, also

ok so tonight I was messing around and I went to the fuse box underneth the dash. The 10a tail illum fuse keep blowing out. When I put a fresh fuse in the headlights go down. So I put a 15a fuse in and it works but after i put it in I smelt a burning smell so I imediatly pulled the fuse and shut the ignition off. Has anbody else experinced this. Oh also my dash lights don't come on. But they were like that when I bought the car. Can anybody give any pointers on what to look for or what i should check. I bought the car in this condition hoping to fix it up.

Well I didn't totally burn up the wires the connections still works I put a 10a fuse in with the ignition off and the lights go down. The fuse blows when the ignition is turned on. does anybody have any Ideas. After I get this gremlin fixed I will need to get the cluster lights to come on. Where should I start looking ?

tailights filled
Check to see if your tailights are filled with water, also check where the tailights go in, if either have water, shorts are a possibility. have somebody watch your brake lights, see if they work? do they blow a fuse, or is it just the running lights? do this first, and report back.

Also, if it is the same in my car as yours, when you fix the headlamps going down, the inside cluster lights should come on too. In my '84 GSL the tail lights, cluster lights, and headlamps were all through the same fuse.

I don't know, the actual ground that was messing my headlamps, tail lights, and cluster lights up was the ground to my cd player. I just had the person who installed my cd player fix it since it was his fault.

Dude, before you go messing around with all these fuses and grounds, simply go to your driver's side strut tower and replace the Fusible Link (FL) that says 'Headlights'.
It's that simple.
The reason why your 10A fuse under the dash keeps blowing out is that the Fusible Link is no longer handling the 'startup' load applied to the electrical system from the motors actuating to raise the lids. When the lids are going up, and in motion, the motors draw much less current than when they are stopped and just start to move - same thing when they go down.
Replace that FL with the CORRECT color of FL, and it'll fix the problem without any other interaction required.
DO NOT attempt to 'build' a Fusible Link using standard wire - it will cause an electrical system fire, and could total your car and hurt you or someone else. Mazdatrix (www.mazdatrix.com) has the replacement links, or try your local wrecking yard. HTH,
