Question Having problem with excessive smoke from tailpipe

Hello all,
I have a 1985 GS that I bought from my father. The entire time he owned it, it never ran even once. It was stored in a barn. I Have since gotten it running and it runs quite well. Problem is that when I first start it, it smokes like crazy. I had a neighbor actually call 911 and report a fire at my house once. It is a little better with the idle lowered by pushing in the choke some. After it warms up, it does not smoke much, just when you get it to higher rpm's. It only has 94k miles on it and I was told that I probably need to replace the apex seals. Is this correct??? Where would I get the new seals from??? What would be the cost difference in getting just the new seals vs. a whole new rebuild kit??? What does that cost and where would I get it??? Thanks for any help you can provide. I want to get this thing running properly. Incidentally, it is a 12a motor.

I also have an 85 GS. Mine does the same thing. Smokes hard when the choke is out, then it runs fine. If I run it past 5.5k revs, it's billows smoke. It also revs on it's own from 5.7 to 7k rpm. That is to say, if I rev it to 5.7 and take my foot off the pedal, it will rev to redline on it's own.

I've always figured the smoke and choke problem was related to a carb that sat for ten years without use. I was going to rebuild the carb, but I decided to live with it untill I can find a Weber.

If you are still running on old fuel that has been in the tank then that would be a major cause of the smoke. If the fuel has been drained or you have run thru the old fuel and now have new fuel in there the cause would be oil control rings, not Apex seals.

As far as the questions about where to get and how much.

Also your local Mazda dealership.

Thanks. I am amazed to hear about the throttle sticking open above 5.5 rpms as mine does the same thing. I was thinking it was due to a fuel tank that is in bad shape. The fuel was kind of rusty colored when we drained the tank and I go through fuel filters like nobody's business.
What is a seafoam treatment???

its a detergent, it cleans the engine. pour it into the carb or the gas tank.

Did you mean to say. Pour it into the oil or in the gas tank?

Also if you do have a problem with the oil control rings I would not recommend the seafoam treatment in the oil. The could further worsen the situation.

I would however recommend the Lucas oil treatment for the oil.

Yes, the only "fix" for worn control rings is a rebuild, but often if that is the only problem with the motor then it is not worth rebuilding for only that reason. Lucas has worked great for me with this issue, otherwise I would have had to rebuild a couple of years ago. The full name is Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer, and you can use one or two quarts in place of motor oil. Heavy smoking at high rpm deceleration is a sign of worn control rings.

If your motor is smoking heavily at startup with the choke out, and revving really high like that, then use less choke. Once the engine is running, push the choke **** back in until the engine is running at about 1500 rpms. Revving that high on a cold motor is bad.

Seafoam; use one full can in the tank with 1/8 to 1/4 tank of gas, then go for a drive. This will remove carbon buildup from the apex seals, which can get jammed up and no longer move freely due to the carbon, and restores compression and power. Very good stuff. I use it every couple of months on my car, which has 208,000 miles and is raced on a regular basis (autocross).

I did it last night, it was good. My post meant it could be used in either the oil or the gas tank, and it was a detergent. Sorry I am so tired today, our schedule at school is all messed up because the kiddies are taking the ohio gradjeeation test.
