Thanks, that gives me a lot to think about, and I love that kind of stuff. I'm considering the same kind of wheels Branca has (local GSL-SE owner). They're 15" wheels, 6.5" wide, GSL-SE offset and bolt pattern. Lots to think about..

I have owned all 3 generation of RX-7 and much prefer the first and third. Second gen is ok but not for me. The engines are essentially all interchangeable so there is no reason to pick one model based on its engine alone. The interior is low quality in all the RX-7's, even the latest 2001 model I saw still looked cheap.

Handling of the first generation car has been studied for 25 years now and there are many ways to improve. It can't beat third gen handling, but can definitely beat the second.

The S2 and S3, (81-85) are very similar and the parts are interchangeable but 84/85 have some disadvantages. The 84/85 rear suspension mount points are better until you lower the car, then they are a disadvantage. The 84/85 instrument panel is a bad design and wrong colors. Lastly, it is hard to find 84/85 car without sunroof.

Second generation Rx-7 is not the same type of driver's car as the first and third. It feels heavy and sluggish but is available as a convertible. Third generation RX-7 is much more enjoyable to drive. It can be reliable if you take proper care of it and make reliability upgrades. However because it is more complexe, there are more potential points of failure relative to comparatively simple first generation RX-7.
