hard start = fuel problem

I am having trouble getting the R fired up when it has not run in more than a few hours. It takes 3-5 minutes just to get an idle without stalling, even with the choke. I sprayed some quick start in the carb and it fired right up and idled for 5 seconds, then died. This is telling me that the problem is with the fuel delivery. I replaced one fuel filter, but found another one before it. I will replace that tomorrow to see if it solves the problem. If not I think it might be the pump. Any easy way to check that? I can hear it activate when I turn the key in the on position.

It can still be pumping but it might not be enough pressure. Also check the fuel lines going to the carb for kinks or internal blockages.

Can I put a pressure guage anywhere to check the pressure? On my Mustang I can use a tire guage on the fuel rail.

Test the pressure as close to the carb as you can. Go to the parts store and get a cheap small guage, usually with all of the chrome gizmos for v8's. Then go to the hardware store and get a brass tee from the plumbing dept. that has 2 hose barb ends and one that the guage will screw into. Cut the fuel supply hose and put the tee in (with clamps, of course) and put some teflon tape on the threads of the guage to seal that end. Voila! An inline fuel pressue guage. The stock pressure should be 3-4 psi. I'm not sure the what metric equvilant is.

How does it run at higher rpms? Does it start better when it's warmed-up? -WG

With the choke fully out, the revs should also be up to at least 1500 - 1600. Not exactly idle. Are you a new owner?? Spark, timming, oil viscosity??
