Gslse

Long time rx7 owner but stumped

bought 1985 gslse, 176,000km
3rd owner (say 50ish), a car guy but not a rotary guy

Had an issue with it running a little funny and noticed the tach bouncing

Parked at home and later wouldn't start

To me: this is indicative of a failed trailing igniter. Effects fuel and the tach

He did a bunch of on line research and had some guy claiming to be a mechanic help him

Removed the clutch fan and shroud for some room to work, god knows why.

Installed a used igniter, wouldn't run

They did more googling, did a deflood on it, put oil through it, tried starting it by towing it, still no luck

Then the mechanic disappeared

So it then sat for 2 years, posted it on Kijiji and I bought it

Did some quick attempts and diagnosis last night

Hooked up charger and booster cables and cranked it over, added starting fluid to help

It made one good hit but didn't fire, not even an almost

Tach would bounce a bit, good sign for trailing igniter

Check for spark, good there

Pull a plug from each rotor one at a time, got 3 solid pulses from each rotor (🙏thank god) and a fireball from the contents and a spark, lol

That was the end of the night, happy that far and put the battery on a charger

Went out today hoping for a miracle, nope

Did a static timing check and discovered it's off by a tooth, also the retaining bolt is snapped off (seller did point that out)

Reset the dizzy, no luck

Swapped in 2 used igniters, no luck

Pulled all the plugs, cranked it over to clear everything out

Sprayed some oil in the plug holes

Used a lighter to burn anything off the plug tips and reinstalled

Crossed my fingers, no nice

Little squirt of starting fluid, no dice

Tach does bounce when turning over which is a good sign

Now back on the battery charger awaiting round 3

any suggestions??

Might be time to check compression #s, rule that out. If you're getting spark, and some ignition source you'd need compression to fire it over.

how are the cap and rotor? if unknown to you, you should probably change them.
