GSL SE , turbo

hey i had a question..I have a 85 GSL SE with a mild street port and i was thinking about turboing it..I was told you must lower your compression to run boost over 10lbs and I was wondering how much boost you can run on a mostly stock motor without having to adjust alot of this and be worried about engine life

I have a follow up question to this, I have been thinking about the same thing.

Would 5psi make much of a difference? My friend has an old turbo off an old eclipse and she is willing to sell it to me, from what i've read, they only push about 5 psi, would I notice much difference with that little of boost, and would I be pretty safe at the psi?

ohhhhhh geezzzzzz... here we go again.

..I was told you must lower your compression to run boost over 10lbs
damn i love this one!!! NOT TRUE... i've proven it above and beyond. i've run in excess of 20psi on a bone stock high mileage 12a. your 13b will be fine over 10psi. it's ALL IN THE ******* TUNING!!!! people that automatically say "ohh noes, my life is over because i don't have 8.5:1 compression and can't go over the 8psi barrier!" WTFBLACKBABYJESUS!!!!

ok sorry about that....

now you are asking how much boost you can run? well the answer comes in the form of many more questions:

- what is the highest pump octane you can get/ will be using?
- what is the average atomsphere temp?
- what is the compression of your motor?
- do you have enough fuel? (injectors, pump, lines, etc....)
- is your turbo efficient at higher pressure... or does it just blow hot air?
- will you have an intercooler?
- do you have a way to let out underhood heat?
- do you have sufficient ducting to your radiator, oil cooler, intercooler
- the list goes on.

there is NO set answer to the "how much boost can i run" question.

i've had success running 16psi DAILY NON INTERCOOLED on a stock 12a with the STOCK NIKKI CARB. the motor always had low compression in the front rotor (from waaaaay before the turbo setup) and STILL took the abuse! ofcourse now i have a better (still stock) 12a in there and intercooler, holley carb, etc... and i've, not really meaning to, hit over 20psi quite a few times... which just breaks the tires loose in 5th gear.

i am but one of MANY with great experience with high boost on pump gas with high compression. soooooo many people still believe that you MUST use lower compression rotors etc... and it does help with resistance to detonation and allows for more tuning error. more power? that's a debate all it's own...

if you really want to keep it safe... find the most efficient boost level of the turbo you will be using (hopefully around the 15psi area unless you put a monster on there) and rock out. if you reaaaaaalllyyyy want to be safe about it, just keep it at 12psi and tune accordingly...

all in all....... YOU WILL BE FINE!

also the 12a turbo dizzy is not needed. and it's only good up to around 6psi for pulling back timing.

just lock your distributor at 10 degrees advanced for anything over 10psi and you will be fiiiiiiiiiiiiine.

If you're wanting to turbo your SE its going to cost you some money to do it correctly. I don't know how much boost mine is going to push yet, its getting tuned soon.
