The fuel/air mixture on a 'SE (which would be fuel injected) receives its info my the O2 sensor which tell the ECU to richen/lean mixture.

If everything is fresh, like spark plugs, cap, rotor and a recent oil change.....and its still running rich.... You might be looking at get a replacement converter.

Ok, I found the variable resistor for the idle mixture. I just got the car and it looks like someone has removed the goop and I suspect that someone else has been in there. I'd like to know if any one has a adjustment procedure for this? Please help I don't want to go to rich or to lean...

I don't know the procedure. If you are wanting to run it leaner then stock to pass emissions than just play with it. Detonation is not an issue with NA's to this extent.

Do you have a smog pump? cats? rats nest? If not then your on the right track and the only way you could come close passing is running it way lean and limping it to the inspector. Make sure that everything is in working order first. TPS adjusted, BAC cleaned and working, and fresh 02.

Good luck
