GSL-SE open filter

Anyone seen or doing an open filter on their -SE? I looked at a car this past weekend and Im not sure if they were doing it on pupose or they just lost the filter cover, but they had the filter zip tied into the filter box without the top on it. What would be the advantages or lack there of with this? Ive read and have seen dyno reports that show the stock filter box is the best for hp but I am curious because this just increased the surface area (air suction available) by quite a bit. Any comments, I thought it was very interesting.

it would be sucking in hot engine bay air. I dont see an advantage except instead of getting X amount of cool air from the stock setup your getting more hot engine bay air. Doesnt sound like a winner to me.

What about the cone filters folks put in front of there afm's, this is the same thing inst it? Just without the cost of one? And if you took the air tube and re routed from next to the battery and into the air stream wouldnt that give you some cold air? I just see people with the cone filter and this looks like a viable alternative to me. Thanks for the input. Anyone willing to dyno (or butt dyno) this? Would be interesting. Both my -SE's are waiting for parts, need a couple of days and I can, but I know we have some adventures out there. I think zip tying is out of the question, should be able to secure it with some wire over the top.

My airbox has been opened up, in the front only where it matters so little engine heat gets in... cool air is funnelled from the airdam, improved throttle response and has worked better on my car than a cone type air filter. Best free mod that Ive done, just takes time to Dremel and repaint
