GSL-SE intake flap
Denny told me to rip that flap out and I can't get the MAF box open. Screw heads are stripping. Am I right in assuming it must open to get that thing out? Is it worth drilling out half the screws that are stripped?
TIA,
Aaron

From my understanding, there is a flapper door in the intake, just past the filter box. It is in a housing that also has the MAF on top. Denny said it is closed when cold to heat up the engine quicker. However, it also is a restriction when open and obviously another potential failure could cause reduced power.
If this isn't it's function and it's the actual mechanical part of the MAF sensor, I'll leave it. It just seems really big for a MAF sensor.

You may want to double check with him that just doesn’t sound right.
Wonder if you two are talking about two different items.
From my understanding The AFM’s or Air Flow Meters barn door is there to Meter the Airflow to the engine. It’s also part of the loop in the fuel management system; there is a potentiometer on the barn door shaft that varies the voltage to the fuel injection system dependent on the position of the barn door. It is part of the loop controlling the fuel injection system. You inadvertently screw it up, you could end up with a dead – SE.

there are "flappers?" in the throttle body "secondary throttle plates", which are closed when cold, and some people "me" remove them. but not recommeded if you drive it in the winter.

the flapper in the MAF are functional and removing them is a big mistake. Now there are other flappers right where the rubber 4" hose connects to the throttle body. removing those, i don't know??

I got a spare throttlebody and modded it, and then when winter comes I can just swap it back to stock. But I don't drive the 7 in winter anymore, to hard on them, hehe
but they are fun in the snow!

Whoa, Boys!
The butterfly flap is only in 12A carb engines....The air cleaner has a heat senitive spring in the lid of the air-filter that works a butterfly flap that resides inside the air snorkel. If you have a carb 12A remove said flap to increase air flow to the carb....Do not try to modify the injected engine 13B intake...Unless you're Mad Max....What you can do is to remove the plastic air intake tube that feeds the air-cleaner box and construct your own cold air intake that can feed thru the grille opening.
Sorry for any misunderstanding,
Denny, from the old corncrib.....

Thank you for clarifying, Denny. I won't bother removing any of that stuff from my SE. That MAF sensor does not look like a very ideal setup, but this is 1984 design, early MAF days.
Thanks to all.
