Gsl-se Intake Butterfly Question

When you take apart the intake/trottle area there are 2 sets of butterfly's... the second pair that only open under almost full trottle. I've heard of people removing them. Has anybody experimented with this? Or will removing them mess-up mixture's? In theory it should flow more air... but I don't know if it will lean out the mixture? Rx7's tend to pass alot of unburned fuel... causing backfire... could this be a way to help solve us of that problem, ingiting more of the fuel??

Just my thought.... what are yours?

I've removed them on mine. I just filled the hole where the rod was with a large bolt and some epoxy.
then I just connected the 2 coolant lines together.
I used a spare TB so I could swap back for winter (I now no longer drive it in the winter)
better throttle responce. seems a bit crisper. it did make my idle a bit funky, but thats ok with me.

Max7 thank for the reply you've been a great help with my car...
as for the butterflys I was thinking about just unscrewing and removing just the circle pieces and leaving the shaft in place? That would be alright too? right?

for Fuel injected cars, I'm sure you could do it on the carbs too, just not sure how.

Yes you can remove just the plates and that would work. I removed the rod and the thermoswitch to help elimate sources of heat as the coolant flows thru there and with it removed, it would allow the intake to run cooler

Donna: They are talking about the injected version. You don't want to disable your carb secondary's. Not the same ball game.

A side note: If I'm not mistaken, I remember reading a post from you quite a while ago: you had bought the car new and then found it after giving it up? I enjoyed reading that and meant to respond, but didn't. Great story. I've not been on the forum that often, but if I recall correctly, your's was an '85. I have an '84 -SE which I also bought new. It must have been a blast to get yours back! I hope it's running fine: you must be enjoying it.

Of course, if I've mistaken you for somebody else, then please ignore this post with my apologies (except for the injection/carb part.) :p

Well... my thoughts:

"the second pair that only open under almost full trottle. "
That is true for a carb., not fuel injection.

But you also say :
"Gsl-se Intake Butterfly Question " and "intake/throttle area "
If indeed we are talking about a 13b (-SE) then the secondarys are only activated during warmup, and open when the engine is warm.
Assuming we are talking about a 13B:

"Or will removing them mess-up mixture's?" :It won't change your mixture a bit: they are only used for a smooth warmup. Once the engine is up to temp., the reduction in airflow by the secondary throttle valves on a stock engine is next to nill. The people who see a difference may be the 2nd and 3rd gen guys with turbo's.
Yes, you can remove them. Yes, it will flow more air.
But the benifits are minimal on 1st gen's. The secondary throttle valves only come into play on warmup. After that they are open, and yes, slightly restricting, but I don't think you'll never know they're there (or not) unless you have some serious intake and exaust mods. Some people like to remove them on 1st gen's just because they like to remove anything that is not necessary to run the engine. Nothing wrong with that, but if you are not going all the way, don't worry about the secondary's. The driveability is worth more than the gain for that particular mod.
As I said, my thoughts.

But Max7 seems to like it, maybe you will also.
:p
