GSL-SE at heart.

Here's the story, been a second gen guy for years now but recently came upon a project (read: free) car that I couldn't refuse.

It's a 1989 Mazda B2600 4x4 with the 13B out of a 85 GSL-SE in it and as all projects go, it doesn't start. Here's the catch, I got it from a buddy of mine and it has been sitting for 6 months or so. I know it ran and drove just fine beause I have seen it and driven it.

Now it turns over and all that, but it won't start. I have changed the gas, changed the oil, changed the plugs, and changed the wires. Still doesn't start. I have no idea what's going on. It allllmost started once today. When it's cranking smoke comes out the exhaust so I know it's getting spark, and I know it's trying because it makes the noises that my FC does when it's flooded and just about to start I don't really know what to do with it.

Are there any tricks for unflooding a REALLY old and flooded motor? I try not to let mine sit more than a week, and even then it's pissed at me.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

try filling the engine with marvel mystery oil, pour it down the carb, or fill it in the plug holes if its still EGI
let it sit for a day and try starting it

if its flooded really bad you can pull out the lower plugs and turn the engine over a bit, it will spit out lots of the fuel. And greg is right about the mmo, it will help build better compression. Have you messed with timing at all?

Ummm....

Check for a vacuum leak first and foremost. When I installed my SE engine, I didn't connect the hose that runs from the back of the intake manifold to the exhaust. Caused exactly the same symptoms you describe!

See my No start thread in the FAQ... It's applicable to almost ANYTHING...

And while you're at it, take pics of the engine bay and under carriage. I've been meaning to do a rotary swap on my 1989 B2600i 4x4. Of course that's years down the road, but I'm still doing research.

My main concern is routing of exhaust. I'll probably be using a 13B-RE Cosmo, or 2nd gen 13BT engine.

Ok, she started, it wasn't happy about it, but it did. Just once, now it won't start again.

Now on to my next question.

How much smoke should one expect to see from a motor in this condition?

It was like the thickest fog ever had just rolled in.

Well I got it started (yay!) but it wasn't real excited about it.

At all.

Which leads to my next question.

How much smoke would one expect to see out of an engine such as this one?
