Gsl-se fuel tank strainer in pick up tube?
Hey Guys
I’m currently working on my 85 se and replaced the fuel pump and filter next to. I have been doing some research and have seen 2 different people say there is a 3rd strainer inside tank on the pick up tube. The fsm doen’t say anything about that. Does anyone know ?thanks

As you've found out, the SE has a strainer basket of very fine plastic mesh at the lowest point of the tank which keeps the fuel pickup supply clean of coarse debris. The factory Mazda part is NLA; the good news is that users here have found the mid-90s Jaguar fuel pickup tubes used a similar strainer basket which will fit with minimal effort. I think there was some minor X-acto knife cutting, but apart from that, it's an easy swap if you have the tank fitting out and the strainer in your hand.
The SE Fuel filtration path is as follows: Tank -> Pickup Strainer basket -> coarse plastic filter in Fuel Pump inlet side -> Fuel Filter inlet fine mesh -> Fuel Filter, and then up the feed line to the Fuel Injector rail and back to the tank via the return. All of the fuel filtration happens at the rear of the car.
Are you trying to solve a specific fuel related problem? Post back, and let's see some pics of what you're working on,

That's probably all that's needed. The OEM plastic mesh filter was useful for catching debris that might have made it's way into the tank over time from bad pump gas, but as these cars aged, they'd collect rust, which would eventually clog the screen and eventually cause fuel starvation to the inlet side of the pump, which would cavitate, cause bubbles in the lines downstream and lead to rich mixture and hot exhaust.
Any rust in the tank now makes it's way to the High Pressure Fuel Filter fine screen inlet where it clogs the Fuel Filter, after the pump. Same net result of low fuel pressure at the Injector rail and lean running. You can still get OEM SE Fuel Filters, and I always keep a spare in the parts box. Being external to the tank, they're easy to inspect or change as part of diagnostics.

Thank you guys so much for you help and time.I did see the jaguar filter before but was trying to avoid any modifications ,if possible . My tank shouldn’t be rusty , but I use to let fuel level get low . I highly considering removing tank just to replace the old filter due to irregular fuel pressure with new external fuel filter and brand new pump.
