GSL-SE 1985 Transpant Question
GSL-SE 1985 Transpant Question
Have an 1985 GSL-SE fuel injected ( 2 injectors) 13b engine. ( first Gen car)
Also have this engine see picture. Had whole car and removed entire wire harness now in basement. Is there a way of using the engine controller to run this 86 13b with 4 injectors for the 86 in the 85 body or should I abandon the 86 Mazda engine controller and go Megasquirt route. Also can I use the 86 spark reluctor in the distributer well to control spark or do I have to use Megasquirt to control fuel and spark. I do see some engine swap packages on ebay that include wire harness and engine controller, but looking at the wire harness I have with the 86 sitting on the floor, there must be 100 pounds of wire. I removed the lighting circuits, wipers and a few other items but there is still a lot of wire here.
Any direction would be helpful.
I have run Megasquirt on my Fiat X1/9 and have a great running engine.
Thanks.
TonyK.

My opinion?
Easiest thing to do would be to figure out a way to consolidate those 2 wiring harnesses (the stock -SE harness with lights, et al - and the 86 13b harness) into one, then run the stock 86 ECU in the same location under the passenger footwell. This seems to be the most straightforward approach, and the 86 engines added about 15 more HP (*IIRC) due to the 4 injectors and slightly improved breathing through the AFM and DEI chamber. I would also assume that you have the correct AFM for this car, since the version from the -SE is not likely to work with your 86 ECU.
That said, the 13b engine core is the same between your -SE and your 86 engine, other than front engine mounts, (*again, IIRC), and you could probably strip enough off of the 86 engine to install the -SE intake, exhaust and other components. You'd even have the '6'-ports running as they were designed, as all 2G cars had '6'-ports with the exception of the T2 models.
There may be some other small parts that are different between the engine cores, but if you're otherwise happy with your -SE intake, that might be easier.
Of course, if you've done Megasquirt before, you have my respect - you should be able to hook that up with help from the guys here who have done it.
