Is it a GSL?

My co-worker has what he claims to be a '81 GSL five speed for sale as a parts car for $100. It does not run. He states it ran about a year ago. I don't know if it is a true GSL. It has the GSL tags, gold exterior, brown interior and the waffle wheels. Did the GSL's come with waffle wheels stock? I know the car is better than twenty years old and the wheels could have been swapped at one point in time(they have three '81 7's). I am interested in the rear axle for my '85 base model. Will it bolt right in? Miles unknown, have not seen the car personally).

Its possible the wheels were swapped from another car.Its also possible all the GSL options were swapped into a lesser model too.Either way youd still be getting a GSL.....

If it has all the power options(windows,mirrors,hatch/fuel door,cruise,sunroof,AC,rear wiper/washer,reardiscs/LSD).....then yes,its a GSL.

Man you should buy it anyways as long as its cool with your wife. Just having a parts car makes evrything easier. "Hey I think my carbs messed up". "Hey lets go get the extra one and se if it does the same thing." Also nice when you want to keep driving it around and rebuild a carb.

An 81 rear axle has a different driveshaft flange bolt pattern than an 85.

Well technically you shouldnt just swap them without doing all the pinion setup work, but people have sucessfully done it anyway.

Different flange??? That sucks. I have heard about adjusting the bearings on the pinion with changing the flange. Can I use the driveshaft out of the parts car to match the flange?

The guy I work with said he would give me both of the "parts cars" for $150. I don't have room for them here. Ian, you have a trailer? You could get the silver one if you want. He is 80 miles west of dsm. interested?

The huge difference is the GSL has 4 disc brakes. One of my 81s has rear drums. Also leather interior & power windows is on the GSL. The sunroof is also a plus.
