Ground your fuel pump? guess so

Around 3 this afternoon i hop in the 7 and "attempt" to take it for a spin. I get halfway down the street and it dies. I figure i might have flooded it after trying to start it afterwards...but there wasnt any gas in the carb. I realize that i dont hear the normal clicking of the fuel pump, and check the fuses. Theyre all good. I pull the pump and check it while in my hand. Its really weak, and is barely "clicking" *(only getting 1 volt according to the meter). Although it has an internal ground, just for kicks i press it to the door jamb. BAM! it almost vibrates out of my hand ( 10 volts!). This is when it started getting weird. I re hook everything up and the pump is weak again. I figure that if i ground it in my hand, then i should ground it while in place. I rig a ground from the pump to the body, and it works perfectly. I actually notice more power than before. The car runs great now...but it was weird. Has anyone else had this problem?

Dont just blame it on the ground. There are other parts to the equation.
