Got it started Problems running

I have an 81 RX7 engine. Heres what I have done so far. New gas tank, lines, carter fuel pump from rock auto, new fuel hoses, filters, spark plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, and I rebuilt my Nikki. First the fuel pump was too strong and sank my floats so I put a regulator inline. Then I pulled out the spark plugs and dried them off. Then I cranked the engine until no more fog came out of the spark plug holes. I put the plugs back in and a little atf down the carb. So I poured a little gas down the carb and it started and flew up to 3000 rpm and stayed there. After playing with the idle screw and it having no effect, then I unscrewed the dash pot that didnt help. Finally I noticed the cable from the solenoid on the fender was pulling the throttle. I disconnected it and the car idled down to 1,000 rpm. At that point it was missing a little and running with a slightly bouncy idle. I tried revving it and it bogged then Id let off the gas and go in slowly it took a few tries and it reved ok. Then I picked up my screw driver to adjust the carb. Just before I could touch it the engine stalled and I couldnt get it to run right after that.It would start and almost immediately stall. Even feathering or pumping the gas wouldn't work.

Two things I noticed when I rebult the carb. The previous owner cranked the nut all the way down on the accelerator pump rod. Is that like something RX7 guys do for some kind of gain? I left it because I wasnt sure. The other thing is the altitude compensation valve. When I took it apart there was no gasket, and I didnt see one in the kit either. Is there supposed to be one in there?

Im kind of at my witts end. Im probably missing something huge and obvious. Please help.

The biggest problem is I need the car for when I go back to work for the first time in 6 months on friday.

Ok, I went back outside. For some reason it started right up. It ran up to 2000 RPM after about 10-15 mins it smoked less and it dropped down around 1000 rpm again. I tried turning the mixture screw and saw no difference in the idle. Then it started to stop missing and evened out a little. But as I was sitting there watching it all the sudden it surged up to 2000 rpm for a few minutes then I tried to rev it, to see if it would lower down. It bogged as soon as I touched the pedal, if I play with the pedal it will rev and if I do it again it backfires out the exhaust. The hose that comes from the thermoreactor to the air cleaner smoke is constantly coming out of that. I tried to take a video of everything. But its a little dark. Hopefully I can get it up on here in a little while.

Well, first off - it's flooding. The fuel pressure regulator probably helped things, but if you can crank that thing down (adjustable?) to the lowest setting it may keep the bowls from overflowing enough that you can drive it.

That 'cable thing' was likely the cruise control if your car is equipped. Also, the thermal reactor hose is actually only routed from the heat shield around the reactor to the intake, so smoke coming from there could be oil burning off the reactor and getting sucked up the hot air intake vent which is nothing to be concerned about - as the thermal reactor will get very hot if your engine is running rich, i.e., flooding - which we already knew.

Choke is off, right? Also the idle mixture screw and idle screw should effect some change, both in idle quality and in idle speed - so if they're not, you're not to the point of fine tuning yet because your carb is running too rich. Back to fuel pressure regulator.

The fuel pressure regulator is adjustable, I am going to go pick up a gauge today to make sure its at a good psi. Do these car like 3.5-4psi? Just to try and get it right I turned the key on so the pump would run then I turned down the fuel pressure until fuel stopped dripping down the boosters. Then I lowered it a half pound from there.

The choke butter fly is open. I was afraid to flood it so Ive actually never pulled the choke cable on the car. Does the Choke coil on the side of the carburetor activate with out engaging the choke from the cable?

I took a video Of it running. I got an inline gauge and hooked it up I only have 2.5 psi without the engine running and running I have 2. Im guessing the lack of pressure is because of the return line.

Going with what LongDuck Said I started checking my float levels They were way high. Ive been playing with them for a while. They're hard to set. I now have the front almost perfect its just a hair above the notch on the sight glass in the front but the back is too low its like just at the bottom of the glass. Whats funny is they're at the exact same height. I'm going to try tweaking the back some more and Ill let everyone know what happens.
