Got new Racing beat headers for my 85 GS and now I cant Idle
I just got my racing beat exuahst for my 85 GS (cant spell) and I just put it all on, Headers, Presilencer and muffler. Got it all hooked up pretty good if I say so myself. Well anyways when i fired up the engine, i hear a loud screeching sound coming from, i believe the carb. When I got out of the car to check and actualy listened my car warmed up and the choke popped in. Then my car stalled. Now my car wont idle either. I capped off all the holes on my carb so I wouldnt have a vacume leak. (Oh I still have the stock carb, racing beat said it can be done. ) SO after there is no vacume leak my car still cant idle. I was wondering if anyone can please help me. I was thinking to raise the idle up but dont know where to do it. My car trys to idle and kinda did for like 5 min. at 500 RPMS. thats not good i believe. SO if anyone can offer me any advice, that would be appreciated. Thanks

What about the ACV (Air Control Valve) and air pump? Did you remove the ACV and use a block off plate? It sounds like you have a large vacuum leak. Check the ACV. I would also check to make sure you didn't accidently remove the brake booster line or the hose for the shutter valve (located under the carb).

There is a hose (approx. 1/2"dia.) that you should have plugged off in the process. It's on the bottom of the carb at the firewall. Recheck how well this is plugged off. I had this same problem and found the hose had a crack in it right at the bend. Probably due to exessive heat over the years.

Odds are you have a vacuum leak. Are you sure you got a good seal between the intake manifold and the ACV block off plate? When I did my header, I just used some silicone sealant stuff and it didn't quite do the job. I went back and put some paper gasket material between the manifold and the block off plate and that solved everything. If you want to find a vacuum leak, with the car running, spray some carb cleaner around possible areas and the engine will speed up if you spray around an actual leak.

Did you use both of the block-off plates that came with it? Also, did you actually remove the air pump? I just installed this same system a couple of weeks ago without issue, so I'm guessing that you have a vacuum leak at one of those two points. Good luck!
