Talking Got My Pump, Regulator, & Gauge Installed Today.

Well, as the title says, I have it all installed now. It took a lot longer than I thought due to unexpected complications, but its all in and working now . So, I now have my Carter 7 PSI fuel pump, a Holley 1-4 PSI regulator, and a Holley 0-15 fuel PSI gauge all "under the hood" less than 5 days after it was ordered. I ordered it from Summit Racing on Thursday last week, it got here that Saturday, no special shipping costs or anything. I was impressed . I used a friends credit card, so it went to his house rather than mine, so it sat there the whole weekend, but when I got it all today, I went right to work .

First of all, the regulator wouldnt fit under the hood . It was too tall, and wouldnt fit directly on the firewall where I originally wanted it. So, I made a bracket out of some leftover aluminum angle stock form the oil cooler project to hold it out further, and also allowed me to screw it to a different point on the firewall, making it low enough to clear the hood. The whole regulator install process took about an hour.

Then, I went to the fuel pump. Boy, that was a pain. Im not gonna climb under there again anytime soon . Unfortunatly, I didnt have my camera, so I didnt take pictures, but if I can get to someplace that has some ramps (rather than a jack and stands like here), Ill get under there and take some pictures. Anyway, after finally getting enough of the stock parts out of the way to get anything in there to "visually think", I didnt know what the hell to do. I ended up going with the idea I had seen before with mouting the pump vertically (as suggested) on the rise of the body that makes the rear of the storage bin area. Easy enough. I removed everything in my way, relocated some stuff, etc. After quite some time, I finally set the bracket on, traced where I needed holes, drilled, etc. I got it all bolted on, went to put the pump on, and those little tiny nuts that hold the pump to the bracket ended up getting stripped. Well, not the nuts, but the bolts they screw to. These bolts also hold the impeller cover on the pump itself. Basically, imagine a pice of threaded stock, with an im-movable nut right in the middle. One end screws into the pump holding the impeller cover on, the other goes through the bracket. The odd thing is that each end is a different size. Anyway, I had to fix my car, and I couldnt just run to the corner store to get some new bolts because of their odd shape, size, design, whatever. Well, I ended up coming up with an amazing idea (dont I always?) to use bolts, nuts, lockwashers, etc. So after finally figuring it all out, I got it bolted in the car. Then, I began fighting with the fuel lines to get the stock feed line off the tank, and the new one on. That took a long time too, not to mention a lot of energy. After that, I finally plumbed in the last bits, and wired the pump up using the stock wires (mainly because I was too damn tired, mad, and lazy to do anything else). It works really well, and is a lot quieter than I was expecting. I think its partially due to my "special" mouting that I came up with. Its almost impossible to explain my mounting system without pictures, so Im not even gonna try .

So, in closing, as usuall, there are some pictures at my website HERE, and the old pictures are located HERE. So there you have it, check it out, and let me know what you think . I also plan to take better pictures tomorrow in the day light so my camera actually knows what to focus on .

PS - Towards the bottom of the page, you can also see the power wires I added from the alternator to the battery, and from the battery to the fuseable link box .

PPS - Sorry about the novel guys .

Well, it feels quicker, no more fuel starvation etc. Although, it still feels "slow". I need to hardcore jet it now that I have a real fuel system. I raced a bone stock 82 GS the other day (same color as my car, even had the same license plate frame ), he had a passenger, so did I. It took all my car had just to keep up with him. That cant be right...lol. I have to admit, I felt a little silly with all the money I put into my car, and he was almost out running me. Although, it was cool to race another 1st gen side by side . It sure looked cool as hell, two identical cars side by side . Im sure I just need to jet and tune my carb though.

Yeah, I do. Full single pipe (stock port, whatever) exhaust, and the weber and everything. I really need to get some jetting in there. I also think I might have an ignition problem.

PS - I updated the site with new pictures, and I now have pictures of the fuel pump installed as well .

The first picture on the site is a view from the back of the car under the axle looking straight on at the pump. The hose to the right comes in from the tank, the one on the left goes out (duh ). The second picture is under the car looking straight up in between the axle and the gas tank at the filter to show where its at. The third picture is a shot looking straight up at the bottom of the fuel pump with the rear of the car towards the bottom of the picture. You can kinda see the how the feed line and filter come from the tank here. The others are all pretty self explanitory Id say .

Exactly what pump, guage and regulator did you go with? I can see Carter and Holley, but nothing really specific... I'm thinking of going with this config myself, since the big pump/regulator combo seems to be the best idea for having consistant fuel flow.

What did the whole fuel system cost you?

Good work, and power to you, I hope you figure out where the power loss is soon Done a compression test lately?

The system consists of the following:

Carter 7 PSI Street/Strip Fuel Pump
Holley 1-4 PSI Regulator
Holley 0-15 PSI Gauge
~5 Feet New 5/16" Fuel Line
~10 Screw Clamps
Stock Fuel Filter For Now
Misc Mounting Hardware

The main pieces I got from Summit Racing for $107 + shipping. The rest I got at the autoparts store for another $10 or so.
