All of them....even has all the heat shields back to the muffler. Noticed some clanking coming from the main cat.....could a partially clogged cat cause this?

a clogged cat can easially cause slow revving and hissing from the backpressure. have someone rev the engine while you sit by the muffler. when the engine is being revved, feel how much exhaust pressure is actually coming form the mufler and post back. you should be getting a really good amount or pressure coming out. this is just another thing to check for good measure.

Engine doesn't appear to be shaking enough to have lost an apex or side seal. Check the plugs, make sure they are all firing. You may have lost your leading ignition, the timing may be off, or the fuel supply is restricted. If you have good exhaust flow, that should rule out any restriction or failure in the cats. Check the condition of the cap and rotor too.

You know, Pettit Racing is right up the street from me (about 3 miles). I wonder if those guys could spot the issue? Could save me some time......they look like they are focusing mostly on 3rd Gens and RX8s these days, but they have been around for 20 years. I am sure they have seen it all.

it couldnt hurt to ask. if you can call them and find out if you brought the car up, if they'd be willing to take a look at it for you. i would exhaust all other resources first. check the plugs, the wires, cap, rotor, re-check the fuel filter and see if you're getting sludge from the tank clogging it up. check for vaccume leaks. inspect the carb float levels by looking at the sight glass on the front of the carb(you wont be able to see the rear one on a stock carb with the carb mounted to the intake). at the very least you may want remove the carb and pull the top of the carb off and inspect the floats, pull and clean the jets an dfloat bowles, remove and clean the air bleeds and spray carb cleaner through the air bleed passages and through the jets. clean the base of the float bowls at the point where there is a dip in the bowl. a lot of sediment will get trapped in there. do that, put a fresh gasket on and try that.

Well, he had me hot start it, and turn it off. Then he pulled the coil wires off, and had me crank it. He said that the compression and motor were good. He then had me start it, and mentioned intake manifold gasket....he took the lid off, and stuck his ear in the carb. He them told me that he thinks an Apex Seal is going bad, and suggested a $5K rebuild.
Not sure what to think....bought a box off Protech R, and was on my way.

SeaFoam (just saw that thread).....prob never been done on this car. Worth a shot in addition to the other stuff at this point. I just can't believe that you can tell if an apex seal is going by listening to the carb. I thought you have to pull the bottom plugs and crank it feeling for strong even pulses, to tell that. Starts right up hot (no pumping, no choke) or cold (no pumping, with the choke pulled only), and no white smoke at all....Man, those Pettit comments really got me worried. But I figure he is in the business of selling engine rebuilds...
I am off work tomorrow, so it's plug pulling, carb cleaning, gasket replacing....and SeaFoam.
