General cold weather performance
General cold weather performance
Ok, some of you may remember me from my nice little flooding incident a few weeks ago, but that is fixed now. Now I'm sorta just looking into things I want to do to make her run better in general. The biggest issue I have is she hates cold weather (by cold, I mean anything below 35-40F). If it's below that, when I get her started (usually 3rd try) she will die. Normally, when I start the car, I get it started and keep it alive with the pedal, then set the choke. Should I have the choke set before starting it instead? But if it's too cold, there really isn't anything I can do to keep it running. Usually after a few times sputtering and dying, she then doesn't want to light and I usually just end up taking another car. Generally, I'm just looking for ideas on maybe being able to improve this since a lot of people appear to have no trouble with their 7s in real cold (unlike this wannabe cold here in georgia). I recently changed plugs and a new battery, but I really haven't had the car very long to get in to too much stuff. It's a 84 12A btw since that is probably relevant information
. Thanks and sorry to bug you guys again.

I know mine starts up fine in cold weather, but if I rev it up before it gets to op. temp it shutters and chatters kinda bad, once at op. temp it runs just fine though, in the cold I usually pull the choke out as soon as I can and I give it gas while im turning the engine over, starts right up 90% of the time for me... its only died once when the choke poped back in, but started up fine after that
Pull the choke out before you crank it over. BUT, YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE CAR TUNED WELL! Before you do anything else, tune the car. Check or replace all these things:
1. Plug wires (if you don't know how old they are replace them)
2. Plugs
3. Dist. cap and rotor
4. Battery cables and make sure the battery is strong.
5. Fuel filter
6. Vacuum hose in good shape
7. Timing
8. Carb need to be rebuilt?
After these things if you still have problems yell. Your car should run fine in the cold. I spent 18 years in Minnesota and Iowa with mine. The only time I would have problems is when the temperature fell below 0.
hope this helps,
