General Automotive Question...

I am posting this here, mainly because alot of you have broad enough experience to help me out. That and I dont want to wait three days for an answer

A rod knock, not a push rod knock, but a connecting rod knock. Exactly how loud is it? I am assuming its pretty obvious. But I have a knock in my motor (not the 7's!!! ) I think it is valvetrain noise, but its fairly audible. This is a used car, and has a rebuilt salvage title. I dont know if this helps but it is on a MKIII Supra with a 7M-GE inline 6. Pretty much I am asking, how loud can a lifter tick be? and is there a sure fire way to check/test this without tearing down the engine... J/W....

Sorry mods, I know this isnt the approipriate section, but the general automotive area almost never gets looked at. And I just need a simple answer...

Audiable

How loud is the noise and does it change after the car gets warm
In all likelyhood a teardown will be necessary
and which is it a "lifter tick" or a "rod knock" - take the oil cap
off while the engine is running - hold a rag close so you dont make
an oily mess and listen - if its a lifter tick try MOA oil additive and mobil one
synthetic - lifter noises generally dont hurt the motor however a rod knock
means you are on borrowed time!

I think it is just time for a rebuilt junkyard engine, I will just use this as a core.... its not worth rebuilding... I am assuming it is a lifter tick, because it isnt extremely loud, if you werent paying attention you wouldnt notice it. Either way it doesnt bother me, I just want to figure out what the deal is...

I would definetely recommend moa oil additive and mobil one - @ my dealer
we always try that 1st. before we tell the cust. it needs a tear down - diag
you have nothing to loose
