Gear question

I just had a new clutch and cylinders put in my 80 RX-7 but now it still has a problem with shifting into Reverse and 3rd gears. It will shift but it grinds every so often. Now I talked to a mechanic and he was saying that each gear has like a brass bearing or something and they could be worn out in those gears. Does anyone know what he's talking about and where they are, maybe some pics or something.

synchros, baby
Sound's like yours is going south. Replacement situation so some sort of rebuild in order. For the labor I'd replace them on all 5 gears.
Archives here have PDF Parts manuals - download the 79 or 80 (same tranny) and have a look there-
Some have had some luck with replacing tranny gear oil with a synthetic such as Redline or Amsoil of the same weight. This may smooth it out, give you a few more miles before you need to repair. Otherwise, be gentle on 3rd

You can try using a 50/50 mix of gear lube and auto tranny fluid. Helps keep the synchros cleaned out and moving freely.

Also, its somewhat normal to grind going into reverse. The procedure you are supposed to use to avoid this is; clutch in> move lever into 1st gear> then move lever into reverse.

Good luck.....
