Gear **** removal

Sorry about the dumb question, but - when ya dont know. . .
(Still awaiting my manual!)

Gear **** - how the hell does it come off ?
I thought they had a small allen key type nut. . . ??
Clues ?

The shift **** on a manual unscrews counter-clockwise. After that, the metal piece under it unscrews counter-clockwise. That's it.

The lock nut underneath has two flats you can put a crescent wrench on, then loosen it by turning clockwise.
