Gear/Clutch problem in 81 Series II
Hi,
I've been having some dramas getting first and second gears for quite a while now, it seems to be an intermittent problem so I'll run through some scenarios and what my mechanic has done so far:
1) When starting cold, sometimes its hard to get 1st or second, with car in neutral and clutch out there is a whirring sound, with clutch in, the sound goes away.
2) Sometimes when warm, pulling up to lights, and car is not moving its basically impossible to get 1st or 2nd, pumping clutch and revving in neutral with clutch out and a bit of extra force (in not particularly reproducable order) gets the thing into gear. When the car is rolling slightly, its possible to get it into gear a lot easier than when the car is fully stationery.
3) Other times there aren't any problems grabbing 1st or second, hence the drama!
What my mechanic has done:
6 months ago: replaced badly leaking slave cylinder and bled system.
3 months ago: replaced Master Cylinder and bled system
2 days ago: checked all hydraulics and found to be in good order, reckoning there is something wrong in the gearbox. Couldn't give me a definite diagnosis though.
I've been reading several posts and seen some similar symptoms mentioned in relation to pilot bearings, is this a likely scenario?
Any ideas or anyone who has had similar experiences and found a solution or anyone with any helpful advice, please drop a quick reply..
cheers,
Chris

Tennis, anyone
G'day chris,,if all seems well, the last thing i can think of is the shifter alaignment..maybe some gunk has built up
in and around where the shifter connects to the transmission..or could be the linkage,,when the car is off'
does it shift right ??? notice the position of the shifter.
last resort : replace the transmission,,how old is the clutch ?? how are things down under ??? see ya on the flip.

Hi Mark,
with the car off, the car shifts like a hot knife through butter, really smoothly, no hesitation whatsoever.
The clutch is original 205000 kms (~128000 Miles)
things down under are great thanks, how are things in Ca at this time of year?
thanks for the reply btw,
Chris
