Gas Door Wont Open

Hey guys,

So after the dash swap and some other random stuff my gas tank door wont open. I need to to open to paint inside it. It looks like there is an electronic control module right beside it underneath the cars outer body. What can i do to get this door open?

Thanks

I think you can just put 12 volts across the terminal and it will pull in the pin and let the spring pop it open. All the switch does is energize the wire that runs back there. You are going to want to figure out what you didn't get reconnected in the dash swap and fix that.

You're just needing to open the door to paint inside it, right? The most obvious is to reach in from the hatch and pull on a small metal tab. Look for it. Remove the panel if necessary. This manually pulls the solenoid so the gas door opens. Every RX-7 owner should know about this.

As for fixing the electronics, good luck.

My memory is vague, but I was thinking the manual pull was accessed by removing the left rear tail light.

No need to remove the left tail light. Just reach in behind the carpet and behind the wheel well cover you will feel the release tab for the gas door release actuator. Pull it and the gas door will open.

If you have an 84 or 85, check to make sure you didn't swap the gas door and hatch release connectors. If you plug them in backwards I would think that your fuel door will not open, nor would the hatch. Give that a try and let us know what happens.

They prolly are connected backwards. I looked at them earlier and they are both connected but they are the same looking. I will swap them around and post the result.

thanks

So what it ended up being was they were connected backwards! Every other connector under the dash does not allow this. This one does however.

Thanks.

+1 you can pry the tabs holding the actuator together apart, and clean everything up. I lightly sanded mine and put some grease on it, works great!
