funky electrical problem.

I noticed this the first time it happened some time ago. The first time it happened during the day. I was stopped at a light and the tach needled was going crazy up and down, and the volt gauge was way way down like at 6 or so. When I reved it up the tach seemed to stabalized and the volts went back up. At no time did the engine seem like it was running wrong or that there was a problem with it. I went and parked did what I needed to do and when I got back to the car the battery was dead. I got a jump and everything seemed fine. Tach acting normal and the volts just fine.

So tonight I was driving around and I hit the turn signal to turn a corner and poof it starts doing the same thing. Except this is at night so I see the headlghts dim. I step on the brake same thing. I park it and leave it running. Go back out problem is gone. Go to drive it home and half way there it starts doing it agian.

Could the alternator be causing this or should I look somewhere else?

Alternator, or a bad/lose/corroded ground, would be my first guesses.

Check/clean battery terminals and main (center) fusible link. Sounds more like a bad/weak battery or connections to me. Most local auto parts stores will test your battery and alternator for free.

Sounds more like a battery than an alternator to me. At idle your alt might not be pumping out the power to keep the car running, so revving the engine is giving it more power. The battery is supposed to be the main voltage source in the car, so if it's being forced to run off the alternator, the electrical goes haywire. I've never had this happen to me in the -7, but my Integra did exactly what you're describing for two days. Replaced the battery and all was well.

If the problem persists, i'd get your voltage regulator on your alternator looked at, just in case.

Unknown to me, my voltage regulator was faulty and it caused my factory volts meter to jump around a bit...

...that was until the voltage regulator finally let go when I was upshifting from 2nd to 3rd, causing a voltage surge that fried my alarm system, headlight globes, ALL interior and dash globes, brake lights, stereo fuses, windscreen wipers, high rpm warning buzzer and a few more things.

It was not fun replacing every little globe in behind the dash and refitting a new alarm system I can tell ya!

Cam...
