Fuel tank off, what else to check?

I removed the fuel tank from my SA. I poured out a large pile of rust! Not too sure how I'm going to resolve the issue, but my question is: what else do I need to check while the tank is off? I know my fuel guage does not work, so where do I start there? I plan on replacing all fuel lines. How do I check to make sure the pump is functioning correctly? Is there just one fuel pump? I also disconnected the fuel line from the motor and sprayed carb cleaner through the supply line. SO anyway...what else while I'm back there?
As always, thanks!

Can't help you on all of it but I can help some with the pump.

There is only one pump and you can check by either hooking up a pressure gauge seeing what kind of pressure it puts out (check with numbers in your manual) or you can just let it pump gas into a bucket for a minute and see how much it displaces (also a number in your manual).

Those are the two ways to check your pump.

Well if you are planning on re-doing your fuel tank then I would suggest using U.S. STANDARD TANK SEALER. I used it on my 84 gas tank and it worked great. http://www.prp-porshop.com/merchant....gory_Code=Kits
Hope that helps.

As for your fuel guage sender, theres a high chance that the terminals have corroded to hell. Just give them a good sanding, and a solid connection and see if it works.

POR15 also makes a great tank sealer (POR15.com)
-this is a GREAT time to clean up any rust areas around the tank area. Again, POR15 makes some fabulous rust treatment products!
-might want to replace the 25 year old fuel hoses back there. Can't get new ones anymore from Mazda but they are standard diameter...
-you can get the gasket for the sender unit so make sure you have that replaced. The sender needs to be pulled to clean out the tank anyway
