Fuel Pump Woes

I am getting ready to install my new fuel system. im going to be running a Sterling carb on a Streetported 12a.

Now I have a Carter fuel pump, but the more and more I read up on them. All I hear is how loud it is. Now I know Kentetsu, just had a thread and said he rewired it and it stopped being so loud.

I dont want loud, I want to hear my hard work on the engine pay off when Im going down the road not whats fueling it.

I hear alot of people go with the Mallory 70, they say it is quieter than the carter. On the other hand it is alot more $$$ than the carter. Almost double the price.

Another thing the Mallory has going for it is that, it looks like it would be easier to mount, than the carter. Another plus for the Mallory.

My question: Is it really worth it for that pump.

The Carter is audible only at idle speed. You will not hear it when you go down the road.

The Mallory has a high pitched whine, the Carter vibrates through the body. If you use sufficient dampeners when mounting the Carter, it can be quiet.

I think a lot of the noise issues depend on where/how the pump is mounted. If you mount it to sheet metal, say the underside of the storage bin area, the thin metal will act as a speaker to amplify the noise and vibration.

I mounted mine directly to the frame rail, and it seemed a lot quieter than some that I've heard. I was able to hear AlienRX7's carter running while I was in my car, parked next to him, with the engine running, and the windows rolled up. No ****.

After I installed mine, it was still pretty loud. I could easily hear it at stop lights, etc. It was pretty annoying, but only when stopped. Once the car was moving, you couldn't hear it at all over the sound of the engine, exhaust, intake.

As already mentioned, once I ran all new heavy gauge wiring to it there was a definite change. Now, I can really only hear it if I listen for it. And even then it is not always easy to pick out the sound of it. I'm a lot happier with it now than I was before.

I'm pretty sure that if you stick with the Carter, and mount it to the frame rail as I did, and run new wiring like you should anyway no matter what type of pump you will be using, you will be a happy customer. Good luck.
