fuel pump over heating = bad pump?

i have a mallory fuel pump that is mounted behind the driverside bin. unfortunately i did run out of gas so the pump was running dry for a littl while. after that happened i've had problems on long drives where i will have to turn the car off, so the fuel pump can cool off. seeing as how the fuel pump isnt that cheap i figured i'd ask you guys what you think is the problem. if you need any more info let me know, thanks

Is the pump designed to pull fuel?

possibly a plugged feed line or strainer in the tank, too.

fuel should be more than capable of cooling the pump, assuming it's getting it.

i have a brand new fuel system. new tank, 3/8 in. line, dual fuel filter setup, mallory fuel pressure regulator, and i've had one mechanic who specializes in rx7s said i should never have to worry about my fuel system, so i'm leaning towards a bad pump becuase of me running too long on empty. i'm not sure if i really want to wait to see if it really is bad, cuz then im stranded. new fuel pump not too expensive, but if u got any other suggestions let me know

If your pump is like the one I used to have, the fuel doesn't cool it. The pump motor is above the impeller, so I don't think that running it dry would fry the motor. But why don't you ask the experts at Mallory instead of nephytes like me? They have a very good tech line.

How does the car behave, in other words, what are the symptoms, and how do you know when it is time to shut 'er down on long drives?
