Fuel not getting out

I'm restoring my 79 RX-7.

I've put on a new fuel pump

I've Cleaned the Fuel tank to the extreme

I've rebuilt the Carb

I've replaced the fuel line

I Think I have everything set up right. I turn on the key and the pump works, but all I get is gas fumes

It won't pump out fuel and I have 4 gallons of gas in it.

Is it inside the tank? Maybe its the pick up tube in the tank?

Has anyone gone inside the tank?

please help

Someone out there has got to know!

Oh, I forgot to mention that the car was on ramps when I put 4 gals in, then I tried it with the car on the ground and still nothing.

Does anyone know if the pick up tube inside the tank is rubber or metal what the hell does it look like and how does it work

Pick up tube is metal and will often rust inside and then become plugged with other debris in the tank. I've had the same problem with later tanks. Rod out the tube and see if that helps. Good chance it will continue to plug up until the tank is removed and cleaned

I agree. The other possibilities I can think of are;

Pickup tube is rusted, so you are sucking air.
Fuel pump plumbed incorrectly? (Probably not likely).

thank you for the feed back

I will try to rod out the tube

The tank was cleaned very well. I drained out all the crap, let it sit for two weeks with very strong concentrated degreeser, drained that out and took it to the car wash and blasted the hell out of it.
I looked inside and it was shinny metal !

Has anyone replace the pick up tube?

you know what !
It was nothing but the wrong size line going on the main fuel line

I was sucking air because the line was too big

So I replaced it with a smaller and I HAVE FUEL !!

now if I can only get it too run for longer than 15 sec. It only runs with the choke out
and floods very easily. probably will need to mess with the carb.
I need new ignition stuff / plugs!

just a reminder this is a 79 bringing back to life project. Hasn't ran since 93 and still sounds smooth, and if I can get the brakes to work maybe I can drive it around!

thanks

Good luck Theron. It is a good feeling when the fire for the first time. I just got to drive my new toy for the first time since getting it 6 months ago. Been cleaning it, going through stuff, rats nest removal, 2gdlis, replaced tail lights, and fixing rust. I had mine running good then sat for a while. When I cranked it up next, would flood, seats not seating in carb from drying out. Took it apart, cleaned everything, soaked the needles in motor oil for about two weeks, put it together, and purrs like a kitten. Now to clean the tank, as one fuel filter lasted about 60 miles, then was done.

Cheers,
Travis
