Fuel Guage reading fualty

Ok guys, I have researched but am still unsure. My fuel guage reads way off from what the actual fuel level is. When my tank is full the guage reads about half. With less than half a tank it reads empty. Although i can be driving around and the guage will suddenly jump from empty to 1/4 or 3/8 of a tank. It does this often. I recently swapped the whole tank for a gsl-se tank. The tank fit in no problem and the fuel level sensor connectors were the same ( both 3 prong ), But the guage still reads the same as before. the guage worked fine in my se parts car before i removed the tank. Any one know how to short out the conector at the sending unit on a 3 prong conector. I want to see if it is in fact my sending unit or the guage and wiring. Any additional info will be helpful.

Measure the resistance at the gauge itself. If you have the proper resistance (sorry, I don't have time to look up the proper resistance for you, but the info is readily available), then the problem is most likely with the gauge unit itself.
