Fuel Guage (and other stuff)
Fuel Guage (and other stuff)
Work continues on my latest RX, an 85 GSL-SE. There's the typical rust which I've been fighting on my other RX for 6 years now, and other cosmetic items.
I'm wondering about the fuel guage. The plug that goes into the float on the tank has 3 prongs. 2 are parrellel to each other, and a third is perpendicular. The bottom flat and vertical prongs are fine, but the top flat prong is completely corroded away... Turned into some green stuff.
Anyways, any suggestions? I'm not sure if there's a location on the rest of the assembly that might still be in tact enough to have something soldered to it... I guess that's the hope anyways... Where could I look for it if there's still a stub or something there?
A completely different question is whether anyone knows a good place to get "Mazda" or "RX-7" mudflaps. The car currently has none, but up here they're definately a necessity.

Sounds like one of those corroded prongs is for the idiot Low Fuel light. Mine aren't working on any of my 3 cars.
I guess it's a lot of work to replace the whole sensor (drop the tank?!), so you gotta live without the idiot light (and I've run out of gas three times in the last year - idiot!), replace the sensor, or find an alternate for the idiot lite. I'm toying with the idea of sensing the fuel guage voltage and firing the idiot lite from a zener and an SCR (or somesuch) so that I get a warning before I run out.

Interesting guess bliffle... Right now the guage is not working, but maybe I could just ground the wire for that 3rd prong or something to keep the light off but get the guage working again? I don't quite understand how the electrical system is working for the guage...

My main concern is not the cost of the part, but trying to get it installed. As rusted out as it is under there, I can only imagine how difficult it would be to get the old one out... Might be the best option though anyways I guess... I've dropped the tank before and it wasn't thaaat bad.
Thanks for the input everyone.
