Fuel guage does not work

I have searched and have found nothing. I have an 84 gsl-se and the gas guage is pegged in the empty spot. It has never moved. Were should I check for corrosion? And are there any connectors under the carpet that could be corroded? I am so tired of the broken gas guage.

check the connection on the gas tank. i had that trouble with my gslse and my old gsl too the get corroded bad. probably have to buy a new sender unid. check that. you have to lower the tank to do it.

Disconnect the wires that attach to the sending unit and after cleaning them, short them together with the key in the "on" position while having someone observe the gas gauge. If the guage doesn't move, the problem is either in the wiring or the guage itself. If it does, connect the wires back up to the sending unit and see if the gauge works. If it doesn't, the problem is in the sending unit itself.

the sending units usually are at fault. they corrode up and half the time the tongs will just fall off. good luck to you.

when you say "lower the tank"... how major is that procedure? I know I have a leak somewhere, and that the guage isn't working... I'm gonna replace the entire tank at some point, but if I can fix the guage for now, that would be good.

Basically what I'm asking is : is it a home job?

yeah. the biggest thing is remembering where each rubber hose goes. also empty the tank. otherwise it starts to suck when you release the second strap.also don't forget to pull the electrical plug off the sender unit.
