On my 84, it's in the rear, right in front of the fuel tank.

You cut the filter open.. I usually use a hacksaw and towards the inlet end of the filter. You'll be able to tell the shavings from your cut against the rusty metal from the tank pretty easily...

The new fuel filter I just bought has a plastic casing, not metal. You should be able to see through it somewhat to tell if it's funked out.

Yeah, the stock ones on the cars are usually a semi-transparent white plastic and you can see the brownish sludge looking junk in them.

As for the idle, all I can say is follow the Haynes manual. If you dont have one, get one.

If you want a REALLY good "guide book" - get the Mazda Shop manual for your year. You can find them on the web, and sometimes eBay. I got my for $15. I think they're much more specific, mention special tools needed for the job and they have a lot more exploded views...

Yes, ther is NO replacement for the factory service manual.. for many problems there are invaluable and the wiring diagrams are actually right. But I think I'll hold onto both of my '85 FSM's anyways...
