Question Fuel Filter issues

Hello Everyone,

I am a new member and have a 1982 GS i saved from getting crushed. I'm having a few problems. My car runs great, starts every time and will go like hell for about an hour and then the engine starts choking. I think it may be a fuel filter because it's getting worse. The problem I'm having is that I don't know what I'm doing. I found what appears to be the fuel filter inside a guard attached to the underside of the car just in front of the rear axle on the driver's side. I purchased a replacement filter. Looks normal- cylinder with two straight pipes coming out. What i think is the filter looks to be a little larger with both pipes having a 90 degree bend. The casing is two pieces with flanges held together by two phillips head screws. It's also got two wires black/black w/ white going into the underside of the back of the car. There is also a cylinder hanging with two lines coming in on the top. I was under the impression that that was the carbon canister... I've been known to be wrong before. This seems like a stupid problem to have. I'm sure someone has changed one of these before. I appreciate any help, and thank you for your time.

If its got wires coming out of it, its not the fuel filter. go to FAQ and download a manual. It will help. The fuel filter should be next the fuel filter. I do have an 81 though.

Let me clarify
The item your describing is the fuel _PUMP_! (with wires, etc) - which is UNDER the cover, the filter is -if you are looking towards the REAR of the car, with the pump in FRONT of you, the fuel filter is BEHIND it - ie: between the pump and the rear wheel, completely _exposed_ no cover... Its held by a thin wire looped frame assy that it will just pop out of. THAT is what you want to change! And should do so YEARLY!
'Luck and welcome to RX7 World!

Thanks,

That's exactly what I needed to know. I thought what i had was the carbon canister. I'll get that changed. Thanks again.

7Aull is right. Filter and pump as he said. I have something similar to what you are describing as a choking engine. I replaced the filter and it didn't help. Next thing I am going to try is some sea foam in the tank. I am guessing that I have a restriction on a little mesh screen on the fuel feed line. I have also heard that the injectors could be clogged by some crap. The filter I took off was significantly clogged. I could hardly blow through it. I would say change the filter when you change the plugs. It's easy enough and on these older cars who knows whats in the tank. I will post again once I find out excactly what is ailing my 7. Good luck!

I must say that I'm a little bit illiterate when it comes to automotive chemicals, can you put sea foam in your gas tank? More importantly, Does it burn through with your gas?

Do a Google search on "sea foam motor treatment".

I've never tried the stuff, but a lot of forum members swear by it...
