Fuel Delivery Problem?
I have an 84 with a stock 12A and an unmodified carb ( except for hooking up the teeter totter thingy). I am experiencing what seems to be a fuel delivery problem during autocross; it happens on the exit of relatively high speed sweepers. When I accelerate the engine stutters and doesn't pick up until the car settles again. I run a full tank of fuel and I don't experience the problem in slaloms or tight corners. Sometimes I can solve the problem by going up a gear ie. to third, but this isn't always the gear I want. I replaced the stock fuel pump with an aftermarket Carter and have RB springs, bars and Tociko Illuminas. Does anyone have any solutions/suggestions as to what is happening and how I can cure it?
Let me guess; it only happens on left hand turns, and is usually accompanied by a puff of black smoke out of the exhaust. Does that sound right?
Since you are using a Carter fuel pump, hopefully you also have a fuel pressure regulator (if not, you'll need one). Get into an empty parking lot, and run a tight left hand circle, like you would on a skid pad. Reduce the fuel pressure until you are able to run a tight circle without bogging and you'll be all set.
Good luck, and let me know if this sounds right to you. If not, or if your symptoms don't quite match up, there are a couple of other possibilities...

Thanks. It happens on both left and right turns. It isn't consistent though, and it may be a left followed by a right that I'm remembering. You're right I don't have a pressure regulator so that probably should be the first step I'm guessing.
Yeah, if the fuel pressure is too high it will force its way past the float needle on hard turns and flood the motor out. I think if its a mild case, it only happens on left handers, but if its serious then you'll get it both ways.
If you get a Holley FPR, before you install it take the time to disassemble it and check for any rough spots in the barrel. They often come with burrs that will cause it to hang up and give fluctuating pressures. I still need to take mine apart and clean it up (found this out after installation and issues).
Good luck man....
