Your fuel pump is mounted on the frame. There is no need to change the location of it if you use a fuel cell.

There was a substance you can fill the tank with, it was for anti-slosh around turns. Forgot where I saw it... Summit Racing?

Now I wonder if you could just put those in a stock tank, and then have a AN fitting(s) on the bottom of the tank to have similar results and be able to use the factory sending unit.

I got a 16 gallon poly fuel cell in my 82. Couldn't retain the stock filler neck, so I made my own that fills through a stock neck just behind the center filler between the tail lights. Quite a unique thing actually. Overall, the fuel cell came in at under $350 total with all the install accessories as well, much cheaper than getting a new stock tank or trying to find a good used one.

On another note, most fuel cells come with a filler foam already in them for anti slosh. Mine did, and its just a low end cell by RJS. I've included a few pics of the install.

Not as simple as that with a hatchback like the RX-7. Just mounting a fuel cell in the back will definately not pass any kind of safety check. There has to be some sort of bulkhead between you and the cell itself.

Obviously you are going to mount the cell in the tank location and put a bulkhead over it, I hope. For the filler neck, you can either get a lexan rear hatch and cut out a notch or hole for the neck and cap, mount it on the sheetmetal below the hatch, or mount it directly between the tail lights. If you recess the opening and cap, you can mount the plastic trim piece on a spring-loaded hinged frame so it opens up to reveal the filler neck. One person who did that, made a couple and sold them a few yrs ago. Might be some pics of it somewhere.

I would like to see more pics of fuel cells installed in 1st gens. I am going to be going EFI and think a fuel cell might be a cheaper way than tring to get an SE and stuff.

A fuel cell is meant for safety in racing. Mounting it in the trunk is not safe. Lets say your taveling down the highway at a reasonable 60 MPH, when suddenly traffic in front of you stops. You hammer your brakes and that fuel cell which when full, has roughly 30 pounds of gas in it, plus the weight of the material, comes lose. It's now a projectile moving 60 MPH, heading straight... for... you. I can't even do the math that would tell you how much force that will exert moving at that speed. You'll be lucky if it only takes your head off. Now that same situation, with the same fuel cell mounted in the stock location, all its going to do if it comes lose is hit the ground, maybe slam into your axle housing/underbody/whatnot. When it's all said and done, your still walking. Your car is jacked up, but you can rebuild as long as your still alive. Don't take a safety component and turn it into an instrument of death to save a few bucks.
