Front wheel bearing emergency...?

Hey Guys,

In a bit of a bind here (hopefully not in more ways than one). I just replaced my front wheel bearings in my B-series (I know, not 1st gen, however the adjustment procedure in FSM is identical (except pre-load torque)). Got everything together and it feels good, except for one thing:

The hubs are HOT!

Got to work today, checked the dust caps and I could not leave my hand on them for more than a second.

I've got no play in the bearings, and they are tightened to LESS than the turning torque specified (by a little bit). They were not binding at all when I was tightening them up, and I've got no vibration.

Any help you could provide would be appreciated, need to get home from work tonight!

Thanks,

Matt

well things get hot when you brake, stick your finger on your rotor after you drive around. all that heat is being dissipated into all the surrounding surfaces, including the hub. as long as your wheel spins fine, no excessive slop or binding i think you're ok. unless you didn't use any grease

Anyone? Is the fact that the hubs are hot a positive indicator that I did something wrong? And am I going to be able to make it home on these bearings tonight (<20mi.)

thanks GavinJuice!
...rest assured, I used quite a bit of grease no slop, don't think its binding, hard to tell though right now because the brakes are dragging quite a bit.. (next weeks project )

Edit: was not binding when the brake caliper was off...

I think you just put your finger on the problem - if the brakes are dragging, you will generate heat.

Yeah, I think you're right... and I think I'm a bit brain-dead this evening, apparently... lol..

Thank you for pointing out the obvious... ...much less worried about the drive home now!
