Is the foam on top of the gas tank necessary?

Hey guys,

Finally got my car painted last weekend so I get to start putting everything back together. I have my gas tank repaired and coated (used the POR-15 kit) except I'm not sure about one thing before I hook it back up. When I removed my tank there was a piece of foam or double sided tape on top of the tank. I'm guessing this is to keep it from vibrating against the spare tire well or something? Basically just wanted to know if anybody knows what that thing is for. And if it is important?

Mine was really disgusting so I took it off and trashed it. I don't know where on earth you would go about finding another one if it does need replaced. For those of you that have removed your tanks did you put the foam back in, or replace it, or throw it away? If you replaced it, how, and what did you use? THanks!

Jamie

Yeah, I'd just use something to cushion the tank against vibrations. Maybe some geotextile stuff, the kind they use to retain water and the like. That stuff will last forever.

The foam does help reduce vibration noise, but I believe it's primary purpose is to prevent the metal to metal rubbing and subsequent wear between the tank and body. Similiar idea with the tank straps whitch have a rubber strip between them and the tank.

Most any closed cell or epdm foam that is oil, gas and heat resistant should work as a replacement. Another option is rubber sheeting, either of which need to be about 1/4" thick.
